Our Impact Goals
Diversity & Inclusion
It may sound cliche, but DIOSA is a company that wants to make the world a better place, both for the people and the ecosystems on it. We know that this can only be accomplished if we first strive for inclusivity and diversity not only in our workplace but also in every aspect of the fashion industry.
As a team, we celebrate our diversity and take steps to cultivate an actively anti-racist, and anti-discriminatory environment so that anyone from any background not only feels safe and welcomed, but can flourish professionally. All members of the team are required to complete a course that discusses the prevalent discrimination and implicit biases that still exist in the workplace and how we can unlearn these behaviours. As our small team begins to expand we promise to match this expansion with increased training for diversity and inclusion. We also currently consult a third party diversity organization that aids DIOSA in the development of hiring practices, workplace management, policies and our marketing/representation in media.
Women are the core of DIOSA, literally. As a women-led and founded company, we noticed the consistent trend of being ignored in functional design, being misrepresented in the media and the outright misogyny in the fashion industry. Our mission was to become a fashion brand that actually cared for and truthfully represented women. And we mean ALL women, point blank. That means ensuring intersectionality in our brand is the foundation of what we do.
As DIOSA is dedicated to our 1% for Women initiative for this coming year, it is our duty to ensure each organization that we partner with is equally committed to intersectionality. It is also imperative that we diversify our donations to organizations to ensure our efforts are contributing to women in every community.
Likewise, any collaboration that we have with businesses or people need to actively show a continuous effort and tenacity for diversity and inclusion.
As a currently small team, we know that as we grow so too will our efforts in fighting racism, sexism, and discrimination against members of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community both in our workplace and on our public platform. Our promise to our community is that we are committed to continuously and actively taking steps to educate ourselves, listen to the voices of underrepresented communities, to create a space that is welcoming to all and to strive for a workplace that’s as diverse as our wonderful community.
Product & Packaging
DIOSA takes great care to ensure our bags are crafted ethically with meticulously high quality assurance.
Our manufacturer is BSCI audited. This means our factories are free of child labour, forced work, are actively anti-discrimination, each employee is paid a living wage, and their right to freely form unions and collective bargaining is respected.
Our manufacturer is ISO 9001 certified, so we know each bag has been assured for consistent quality and we know that they are always striving to better their manufacturing efforts.
We use high quality vegan leather that is made from polyurethane (PU) rather than polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is known to release dangerous dioxins, uses plasticisers such as phthalates and making it extremely toxic not only to the environment but for those constructing the bag. PU is less damaging, currently making it the better choice for our bags. However, DIOSA is not committed to this material. We recognize that recent developments in more eco-friendly leather alternatives has left us with a plethora of options to grow in our sustainability efforts.
Our packaging is also a source of our manufacturing that we pride ourselves in striving for conscious production standards. From our reusable protector bags to compostable mailer bags and recyclable boxes, visit our section on Environmental Impact to learn more about the steps we’re taking to reduce harm during our production and packaging.
Our goals for this year include pursuing a more environmentally-friendly leather alternative to use for our bags as well as revamp and reduce our packaging to make each aspect eco-conscious.
Empowering women is a value embedded in DIOSA designs. I mean DIOSA literally means Goddess – it’s integral to what we do and a vital part of being a “business for good”.
Our initiatives not only seek to give back to women in various communities but to also use our platform to work with them, to give space for women and to celebrate our crafts. This is why we’ve paired with an amazing organization in Guatemala, where women practice their traditional handweaving and provide us with our beautiful collection of accessories. Fair trade and ethically produced, this is just one way we strive to uplift and empower women as they foster economic, creative, and social prosperity.
In line with DIOSA’s commitment to advancing women’s independence, we recognize the importance that education plays. That’s why we dedicated ourselves to My Melody School, a non-profit organization working to educate the children of Guatemala. Through providing our financial support, we hope to help raise every child out of poverty.
DIOSA has also committed itself to an initiative we call “1% for Women”. This means that 1% of DIOSA’s gross sales is donated to organizations that share our mission in creating a better, safer world for every woman in it. DIOSA also promotes volunteerism by its employees, including providing an approved amount of working hours that may be dedicated to volunteering. These hours are in-kind donations and employees will be volunteering at relevant women’s organizations.
As we enter this new year, our goal for 2021/2022 is to further expand our partnerships with other women’s empowerment centres. Not only do we strive to continue working with women globally, we’re also passionate about supporting the women in our own backyard. That’s why we’re committed to partnering with Canadian organizations to empower and uplift the women in our own communities.
DIOSA believes that good fashion can be environmentally friendly. Our goal is to produce ethically made products that reduce their harm on our planet.
As a small start-up team, we know there will always be areas to grow and room for improvement, but in the meantime here are some ways we’re currently dedicating ourselves to the environment:
This year, we became 1% for the Planet members, where we’ve committed 1% of our sales to environmental initiatives.
The lining in our bags uses recycled plastic bottles! Reusing and recycling is one area we are determined to grow in and this is just the beginning.
Our packaging is designed to use minimal waste, including using a reusable protector bag instead of a plastic cover. Our mailer bags and stickers are 100% compostable and are made from corn and wheat straw. Our shipping box has also been designed for easy reuse and is completely recyclable, and our hang tags/postcards are recyclable with water based inks.
Our team hosts monthly challenges where we tackle some of our personal consumer habits so DIOSA can make a positive impact from the inside out.
