Kim & Katie’s Ideas for Gifts that Give Back

The holiday season is finally here and we want to talk about what you’re gifting this year. Every year we aim to be more and more socially conscious with our holiday purchases, and we want to share our ideas with you!

What exactly does being a “socially conscious" or "ethical" shopper mean?

Let’s talk about it!

Socially conscious shoppers are those whose buying decisions are based on whether brands are ethical, kind to the environment, and kind to people. Often buying products that are built-to-last and aligned with your personal values.

The term "Slow Fashion" is also starting to be used more and more to help you make fashion choices that are a little better for the world.

New to the whole idea of shopping consciously?

That’s ok! We created a check-list to ask yourself while shopping that may help you out.

  1. Is this something I need and is it something I love?
  2. In what ways is this product/brand kind to the environment?
  3. In what ways is this product/brand good for people?
  4. How long will this item last?
  5. Is there an alternative or can I buy locally or second hand?

Holiday shopping can often be tricky for all of us, let alone adding in the complexity of choosing ethical products.

That’s why this year, we put together some gift ideas to hopefully simplify your holiday shopping experience this season!

Kim & Katies Top 10 Gifts that Give Back

Our gift guide includes like minded brands that we admire based on both their products and their mindset of constantly striving to be ethical and kind to our planet.

1) So Just Shop

So Just Shop’s Keya Earrings and Kavita Bracelet and Necklace Set are the perfect accessories to tie together any outfit over the holidays. Not to mention, they check off several boxes on our check-list! They are a sustainable lifestyle brand with a curation of ethically sourced accessories and homeware.

4) DIOSA Designs

Of course we need to include our own pièce de résistance: The Maya. What started as a backpack became a series of bags that carries you through any situation. The backpack is great for work, school, and travel while the complimentary clutch can also work as a crossbody purse or cosmetics bag. You also get a cute coin purse that can be a mini-clutch or wristlet.

Here's how we're aiming to help people and the planet:

  • We give back 1% of sales to organizations that contribute to a global community of empowered women.
  • We're also members of 1% to the Planet which means we give another 1% to causes that support making the world a better place.
  • 20 water bottles are recycled to make up the lining of the Maya backpack and series of bags.
  • Plus we created the Loveworthy Collection to prevent our not so perfect (but loveable) bags from going into landfills, all while giving you a significant price cut.
  • And, this bag is made of vegan leather which means it's a cruelty-free product.

Next up in our holiday gift guide, we're featuring B Corporations. These are businesses that are certified using a rigorous process to ensure they are being forces of good, doing no harm and benefitting all, and focus on interdependence. If you're buying from a B Corps, you know you're making an ethical choice.

With the winter season just around the corner, we of course had to include some gift ideas to keep your friends and family cozy and comfortable.

Allbirds are: “Shoes inspired by natural materials, and an ongoing mantra to create better things in a better way.”

6) Eileen Fisher

Awesome socks and "Stylish clothing, shoes & accessories with a focus on simplicity & sustainability."
